Half The Sky - The Book & Film Everyone Needs to See

This post is something I feel so passionate about, that I had to share it. Recently, I watched the documentary Half The Sky which is based on the book by Nicholas Kristof & Sheryl WuDunn of the same name, and let me tell you that I received the biggest wake up call. All my life I have wanted to be of service to others, but I have always thought I couldn't unless I got to this point in my life or earned this much money. They are all false belief systems that most of us have. ONE PERSON CAN CHANGE THE WORLD and the best time to start is NOW!!

Half The Sky addresses the biggest worldwide moral, economic and humanitarian issue of this century: gender inequality. The empowerment of women and girls is crucial if we are to have a successful and thriving world. Studies have shown that when women are economically empowered everyone wins - families are healthier, happier, educated and economies thrive.

This documentary takes you on a journey to some of the most impoverished places in the world where women and girls are dealing with sex trafficking, female genital mutilation, intergenerational prostitution and violence against women and girls, just to name a few. The thing about this documentary is how inspiring and empowering it is for every single person who watches it. I was moved to tears throughout the entire film. Most of those weren't tears of sadness but rather tears of inspiration, empowerment and hope. After seeing what these women and girls go through and the strength and courage they are still able to bring to the world is astounding; it really is the most beautiful thing.

Here is the trailer, videos speak a million words:

Many of us get overwhelmed, with thoughts of "but I'm just one person what can I do to help?" Or "I don't have enough money or time." I will tell you right now without holding back, that is complete and utter crap and you know it!

Here are some ways you can change the world right now:

  • Change yourself - start fulfilling your own potential; you have so many opportunities that these women and girls do die for every single day; live life to the fullest because once you have more you become more and that effects everyone around you. As Ghandi famously said "Be the change you wish to see in the world." Change begins with you.
  • Speak Up- read the book, watch the film and then spread the word. Whether that be to one of your family members or friends, your colleagues or social media.
  • Get Engaged - donating time, money or even awareness goes a long way. Fifty cents can de-worm a child in a third world country which allows them to experience better health and go to school; forty dollars is all it costs for an operation for a woman to have her sight returned. Spreading the word and creating awareness is like a Mexican wave. You have the power.

You can view the film at this website and find a list of all the charities and organisations that are in the film www.halftheskymovement.org that you can support and spread the word.

Sheryl WuDunn says is the film "women are not the problem, they are the solution."

Any guys reading this, this is your problem too. So stand up and together we can give opportunities to these women and girls, empower them and create the best tomorrow that I know we all want to be a part of.

Love & Gratitude,
